Are You Using This Banned Ingredient In Hopes of Lightening Dark Spots?

If you’re like me, you’ve spent countless hours looking into the mirror and hoping for some kind of miracle product that will FIX YOUR FACE. Whether it’s from:

  • Age spots
  • Sun exposure
  • Birth control side effects
  • Melasma

or any other condition that has resulted in less than ideal skin situations, you hope that one day you can leave your house without caking on the foundation or feeling self-conscious bare faced.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve googled “what will get rid of dark spots.” I’ve dreamed of finding the miracle cure that will allow me to leave the house without second guessing whether I’ve done enough to even out my face. I’m sure you have too, that’s why you’re here!

Hydroquinone: Miracle or Menace?

Then I thought I found it. Websites and blogs alike were clamoring over the restorative power of an ingredient called hydroquinone. Not new to the market, hydroquinone inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase which is pivotal in the creation of melanin (which is causing the dark spots.) FANTASTIC! People are claiming to see results in as little as 2 weeks! Just imagine, 2 weeks until I don’t have to obsess over imperfections in the mirror (or let’s be honest, find NEW imperfections to obsess over!)

It seemed too good to be true, so my skeptical self had to do a little research before I could give this method the A+ rating.

Spoiler Alert: I did not give hydroquinone the A+ rating, I failed it. Why?

  1. Temporary at best: I learned that the effects of hydroquinone are temporary. Okay, not the greatest thing to hear that once I start a product I’ll have to use it until the end of time (or at least until I stop caring – whichever comes first.) Adding a step to my skincare routine is no big deal.

  2. Prescription needed? I learned that hydroquinone over 2% requires a prescription. Well, that is getting a little more serious about my skincare than I had been before. I wondered why it would need a prescription? As I looked more into it, I found that continued use of hydroquinone can cause a severe rebound of all those dark spots!

  3. Scary side effects: AND ALSO, that it could cause Ochronosis! That’s a scary word - and if you don't know, Ochronosis is a discoloration (blue/black) of skin tissue – and it is generally PERMANENT. So, wait, I’m using this product to remove discoloration and dark spots on my skin… is it really worth risking PERMANENT discoloration and dark spots on my skin??

  4. More scary side effects: I learned how hydroquinone is commonly referred to as a frequent skin irritant. If I can think of ONE thing I don’t want my skincare product to do, it’s irritate my skin. Isn’t the whole point of a skincare regimen to feel beautiful and have soft, clear skin.

  5. Carcinogenic: Hydroquinone has been known to have carcinogenic effects in rats and is still being researched for humans!¹  So, even more than irritated skin, I DEFINITELY don’t want to hear that the FDA is investigating whether my skincare product is increasing my risk for cancer! Imagine - your skincare routine being the thing that could give you cancer? Not cool.

  6. It's BANNED! In fact, the adverse effects pose such a high risk that hydroquinone has been banned in the U.K., Europe, Japan and Australia. These nations are policing people smuggling hydroquinone creams and lotions into their countries. Is that the kind of relationship you want to have with your skincare line? That you cannot even legally take it with you on an international vacay?

For these 6 reasons It’s also banned from Eden Beauty Skin.

Instead of hydroquinone, we have researched for years to find the most natural ingredients that through boosting the health of your skin - will reduce the appearance of dark spots.

It just doesn’t make sense for our brand to call ourselves luxury and natural if the end result is worse skin and health for you. A lot of big-name skincare lines out there might be comfortable with that, but we are not.

So, what do we use instead? A whole HOST of ingredients that will help give you enviable skin.

Licorice is known for its skin brightening properties!²

Honeysuckle’s anti-inflammatory properties can combat blemishes and sun damage!³

Coffee stimulates blood flow and shrinks pores!⁴ ⁵

Lavender is an antioxidant that supports instant luminosity to the skin!⁶

Witch Hazel helps treat breakouts and tighten pores!⁷

Coconut Oil balances the skin’s natural oil production!⁸ ⁹

Cucumber keeps breakouts away and fights dark spots!¹⁰

What do all these ingredients have in common? Well, for one, you can pronounce them – which is nice. But they are also all found in Eden Beauty Skin, because when we say natural products, we mean natural!

Stress of whether your skincare routine is doing more harm than good shows up on your face. That is why we’re constantly researching to make sure our products only contain natural and beneficial ingredients, so our customers don’t have to.

We’re glad to share this information about hydroquinone with you.

If you’re looking for a skincare line that has nothing but the safest ingredients and the best money back industry in the business, try Eden Beauty Skin and get rid of the appearance of those dark spots!
